Why Volunteer?

You possess two qualities that are valuable to your neighbors and community: time and willingness. Recent studies show that volunteering:

  • Brings happiness - To those you help and to yourself.
  • Keeps you healthy - Volunteering triggers the activity of disease-fighting cells.
  • Lowers your stress levels - Focus on others, put less pressure on yourself.
  • Makes you feel great - Give your self-esteem a boost by being a hero.
What Does A Volunteer Do?

Volunteers serve in patient and non-patient care areas. Examples of volunteer responsibilities may include:

  • Reception Services - Volunteers greet, direct and escort hospital visitors and patients at the entrances and in departments. The surgical waiting rooms benefit from volunteers' gracious attention to waiting families. These services are scheduled and volunteers give 3-6 hours/week.
  • Office Services - Busy offices need assistance with filing, faxing, answering telephones, errands and sometimes computer work. Volunteers collate nursing charts, deliver materials, label supplies and handle many errands throughout the facilities. These services may be scheduled for specific days and times, however there are areas where flexible hours are arranged.
  • Gift Shops - Located on each hospital campus, our shops are staffed by volunteers from 8:30 A.M.-4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday. Volunteers serve 2-4 hour shifts once a week. The shops are each a fund raising project of the respective auxiliary.
  • Patient Care Services - Volunteers are scheduled in almost all patient care areas. The assignments vary but many include errands, distributing water, visitation, games, listening, reading or writing.

Above all, our volunteers are part of the Susquehanna Health team and family. Volunteers play a major role in our commitment to provide high quality, compassionate, cost effective and accessible healthcare to our patients and the community.
