Amputee Clinic — A Tradition Of Specialized Care

For 35 years, amputees have come to our Gibson Rehabilitation Center to attend a monthly clinic where Rehabilitation physicians assist them in determining the best course of action to increase or regain mobility. Susquehanna Health's Gibson Rehabilitation Center sponsors the clinic, which takes place on the second Tuesday of each month.

During the initial visit to the clinic, the patient receives an initial clinical evaluation where the staff gathers information on the cause of the amputation, condition of the surgical site, functional status before the amputation and the affects on the patient’s occupation. After the evaluation, the Rehabilitation physician prescribes a prosthesis, wound care and recommended exercises. “We are very fortunate to have several Prosthetists in the area who have state-of-the-art equipment and can provide the very best in prosthetic devices to our patients,” says Fred Chubb, manager of outpatient rehabilitation services. The physician then assigns a caseworker to the patient to help arrange for any necessary therapies. After the limb is constructed, the patient may need a hospital stay to learn how to become functional with their new limb. If necessary, The Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation can perform a job assessment for the patient and determine any necessary retraining before the person returns to work. Patients with an older prosthesis also receive evaluations to determine if they need a replacement prosthesis. If a new prosthesis is required, patients undergo the same process as those who are receiving a prosthesis for the first time to ensure they gain maximum mobility from their new limb.
