Fifteen million Americans are affected by Dysphagia/swallowing difficulties. People with Dysphagia have difficulty and/or pain when swallowing liquids, food or even their own saliva. Some people are completely unable to swallow at all. Causes may include:

• Stroke.
• Radiation for throat and neck cancer.
• Nervous system diseases (Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis).
• Aging.

While eating is a means of nourishment, it is also a social experience. Many individuals experience social isolation because they cannot eat with family and friends, causing severe depression. In addition, complications such as aspiration pneumonia, dehydration, weight loss and malnutrition can occur, sometimes leading to death.
