Barbara Taber Invests Over 45 Years Of Service And Support

In the early 1960s, Barbara Taber and her husband, Tom, received the wonderful news that they were expecting their first child. During a check up, Barbara was given a piece of advice by local physician Dr. Kenneth L. Cooper that she’s been following for the last 45 years. Dr. Cooper, now retired, recognized Barbara’s compassion and desire for helping other people, so he recommended that she volunteer her time.

Her volunteer efforts began in 1963 in The Williamsport Hospital & Medical Center Admissions office, that was located in the area that currently serves as the hospital’s main lobby. Barbara was responsible for escorting patients to their rooms after they were interviewed by hospital staff. Since that time, Barbara has served in just about every area of the hospital including the Emergency department, Family Medicine and Pediatrics. “When I volunteered in Pediatrics, we were allowed to pick up the babies, give them a bottle and do diaper changes,” she says.

Currently, Barbara is serving at the desk of the Heart & Vascular Institute. As a result of her experience, she has made a significant Signature Gift to Susquehanna Health to be used toward naming the Cardiovascular Surgical suites. When asked why she chose to support Susquehanna Health with a financial gift she says, “I think it is vital. When you are ill, you want the best possible care.”

When she isn’t volunteering at TWH&MC, Barbara enjoys singing in her church choir and performing with the West Branch Chorale. It’s evident that Barbara cares about others and seeks to offer help in any way she can. “We do this [volunteer work] because it is what we believe in,” she says.
