Diabetes Self-Management Education Classes

The Diabetes Center is recognized by the American Diabetes Association as a Center of Excellence for diabetes self-management education. Our program follows the guidelines of the National Standards for Self-Management Education.

Our goal is to teach people with diabetes to take an active role in their diabetes care. As a person with diabetes, you are the most important member of your healthcare team. The Diabetes Center offers classes to help you learn more about diabetes and teach you how to work with your doctor to manage it.

Class topics include:

  • Diabetes Pathophysiology.
  • Meal Planning.
  • Blood Glucose Monitoring and Control.
  • Medications.
  • Stress Management.
  • Acute/Chronic Complications and Preventions.
  • Health Care Tips and More.

Instructors: Diabetes Nurse Educators and Registered Dietitians.

Participation in a group class setting is required if you have Medicare and/or Medical Assistance Insurance. If you are unable to attend Group Classes due to a special need that can be verified by your doctor, we will see you on an individual basis.

Classes are for anyone who has diabetes. Please bring a family member or friend with you to the classes.

Taste-In

Participants at the 8th Annual Taste-In were treated to a variety of healthy breakfast selections prepared by the Health System's Chef Richard "Hosch" Hoschar and registered dietitian with the Center, Diane Harrris.

The theme for the event was titled "Wake Up To Good Nutrition."

"We selected breakfast as the theme for this year's Taste-In," says Janice Rupert, R.N., an educator with the Center, "because we feel that too often people overlook the importance of breakfast. Eating a healthy and nutritious breakfast helps jump-start the day and increases the body's metabolism. And," she adds, "a good breakfast also helps give people, not just those with diabetes, a satisfied feeling so they are not so hungry that they overeat at lunchtime."

Sponsored by Susquehanna Health System's Diabetes and Nutrition Counseling Center, this annual event is part of the health system's efforts to make the communities it serves the healthiest communities in the United States. The Taste-In offers people with diabetes, and their guests, an opportunity to learn more about healthy eating, ask questions of the Center's professional staff and to familiarize themselves with diabetes products and resources available from area vendors.
