Newborn Hearing Screening Program

All babies born at The Birthplace receive a Universal Newborn Hearing Screening before discharge. This screening is to identify infants with possible hearing loss, and refer them for additional services as needed. If you ever have concerns about your baby's hearing, tell your baby's doctor as soon as possible.

Baby Pictures & On Line Viewing

To cherish and enjoy the early hours of your baby's birth and share them with friends and family, you may take advantage of our baby picture service and on line viewing options. With your written consent, your baby's nurse will take a picture of your baby after the first bath. Baby pictures are available to view by the end of the working day following the day the picture is taken (babies born on the weekend will be posted on Monday). Pictures will remain on the site for you to enjoy for about 60 days after delivery.

For security reasons, you must type in the identification number that you received in your picture packet from Cherished Memories to view your baby's picture. Cherished Memories also offers a variety of picture packages and gift items that you may order. Orders should arrive at your home about a week after your order has been processed. The Cherished Memories phone number is 1-800-245-6518.

Birth Certificate & Social Security Card

The birth certificate information that you provide for your baby while in the hospital is sent to the Commonwealth of PA Department of Vital Statistics. Their phone number is 1-800-323-9613.

Your baby's Social Security card is also mailed to your home. The birth certificate will arrive in three months and the social security card should arrive about a week later.

If you move, please make sure to fill out a change of address card at the post office to ensure that you receive the certificate.

You may also contact The Birthplace™ at 570-321-2069.

Establishing Paternity

When a child is born to an unmarried woman, a unit clerk provides the newborn's mother and father with an opportunity to complete a form acknowledging paternity. This form must be signed by both parents. The unit clerk sends it to the Department of Public Welfare. Each of the birth parents receives a copy.

Announcing Your Baby's Birth

To announce the birth of your baby, you need to fill out a postcard provided in your Birthplace information packet. After completing the birth information, address the postcard to the newspaper of your choice and mail the postage paid card. If you need additional cards for more than one newspaper, please ask the Birthplace staff.
